Research groups

The Engineering Human-Computer Interaction (http://iihm.imag.fr/en/) research group is one of the 24 research teams of the Grenoble Informatics Laboratory (LIG). The group is headed by Laurence Nigay and is primarily concerned with the software aspects of Human-Computer Interaction. Our mission is to define new interaction techniques as well as new concepts, models and software tools for designing, implementing, and evaluating interaction techniques that are effective, usable, and enjoyable. The group is present among the main international conferences on HCI : publication of papers at the last two years CHI, UBICOMP, EICS, ITS, INTERACT, IUI and ISMAR conferences. In this group, the candidate will be advised by Céline Coutrix (CNRS Researcher) and Laurence Nigay (UJF Professor).
The Collaborative Design team is a research group from G-SCOP laboratory (http://www.g-scop.fr). Its primary interest is in understanding and modeling complex interactions within design activities. A special focus is put on external representations and their manipulations. In this scope, G-SCOP is developping activities and services on collaborative environment, through the MEXICO.FR platform, and offers this services in the European Infrastructure VISIONAIR (http://www.infra-visionair.eu). Candidate's skills

A master-level successful candidate has a strong technical competence in one ore more of the following areas :

Interaction techniques and interactive systems
Electrical engineering
Prototyping and Fabrication Knowledge and/or previous experience in engineering design will be much appreciated.

PhD Topic

The research will focus on tangible interaction techniques at variable scale for product design and engineering. Product design has benefited from tangible interaction through, e.g., spatial multiplexing of interaction tools and the affordance of tangible tools. In the shift toward knowledge economy and society, enterprises are grounding their competitiveness upon innovation. Engineering and design activities are continuously evolving to, for instance, multidisciplinary integration or mobility. Hence, interaction with the digital mock-up of the product faces the challenge of non-professional designers (e.g. FabLab users) and of mobile usage outside of the primary workplace. Tangible interaction tools that suit previous situations are now limited, and new opportunities have to be explored. In particular, nowadays, tangible tools can be re-shaped and scaled at will to suit interaction needs.
Rescaling of user Interfaces (UI) allows adapting to workspace, to the precision the users need, to the users' skills and to digital constraints (consistent scaling between both physical and digital sides). These needs are particularly present in product design where designers go back and forth between abstract and concrete representations of products. The research will take up the challenge of providing scientific and technical contribution to the HCI and product design communities for continuous scaling through tangible interaction tools.

Excellence Funding

PERSYVAL-lab (http://persyval-lab.imag.fr/, http://persyval-lab.org/) is a unique combination of internationally renowned researchers in Computer Science, Automatic Control, Signal Processing, Hardware Architecture and Mathematics at the same location in Grenoble, France. This creates the opportunity for added value research with a high knowledge content and tremendous innovation potential. PERSYVAL-Lab is one of France's Excellence Laboratory (LABEX) that brings the means, funding and management to gain in visibility and capacity to attract high-level researchers and students. The PhD candidate and position will apply to PERSYVAL-Lab funding on June 9th, 2013. Results will be announced at the latest on June 28, 2013.

Applications are invited for a full-time, cross-disciplinary 3-year doctoral research position in the area of human-computer interaction at the Laboratoire d'Informatique de Grenoble (primary) and Laboratory of Grenoble for design, optimisation and production sciences, starting in october 2013 in Grenoble, France.

Résumé
Cette thèse s'inscrit dans les problématiques de modélisation d'environnement pour la localisation par vision monoculaire. Nous nous intéressons tout particulièrement à la modélisation des environnements intérieurs dynamiques. Les environnements intérieurs sont constitués d'une multitude d'objets susceptibles d'être déplacés. Ces déplacements modifient de façon notable la structure et l'apparence de l'environnement et perturbent les méthodes actuelles de localisation par vision. Nous présentons dans ces travaux une nouvelle approche pour la modélisation d'un environnement et son évolution au fil du temps. Dans cette approche, nous définissons la scène explicitement comme une structure statique et un ensemble d'objets dynamiques. L'objet est défini comme une entité rigide qu'un utilisateur peut prendre et déplacer et qui est repérable visuellement.

Professor Hiroshi Ishiguro (石黒浩 Ishiguro Hiroshi) is director of the Intelligent Robotics Laboratory, part of the Department of Systems Innovation in the Graduate School of Engineering Science at Osaka University, Japan. A notable development of the laboratory is the actroid, a humanoid robot with lifelike appearance and visible behaviour such as facial movements.

In robot development, Professor Ishiguro concentrates on the idea of making a robot that is as similar as possible to a live human being ; at the unveiling in July 2005 of the "female" android named Repliee Q1Expo, he was quoted as saying "I have developed many robots before, but I soon realised the importance of its appearance. A human-like appearance gives a robot a strong feeling of presence. ... Repliee Q1Expo can interact with people. It can respond to people touching it. It's very satisfying, although we obviously have a long way to go yet." In his opinion, it may be possible to build an android that is indistinguishable from a human, at least during a brief encounter.

Ishiguro has made an android that resembles him, called the Geminoid. The Geminoid was among the robots featured by James May in his 5 October 2008 BBC2 documentary on robots Man-Machine in his series Big Ideas. Ishiguro has been listed as one of the 15 Asian Scientists To Watch by Asian Scientist Magazine on 15 May 2011. (Wikipedia)

De nos jours, les possibilités de perception tant acoustiques que visuelles ainsi que les nouvelles modalités d'interaction sont de plus en plus performantes, précises et efficaces. La multimodalité n'est cependant pas encore une réalité même si des prémisses existent depuis plusieurs années. De plus, de nouveaux moyens d'interaction comme la Kinect de Microsoft ouvrent tout un nouveau champ d'investigation. Cependant, même si nous nous en approchons de plus en plus, il manque encore une dimension affective et sociale forte dans l'interaction entre la machine et l'être humain. Cette dimension peut s'avérer essentielle dans certaines applications critiques comme le maintien de personnes âgées et/ou malades à domicile grâce à un robot compagnon.

Dans le cadre de cette étude doctorale, nous proposons de nous intéresser à plusieurs champs de recherche pour appréhender les différents aspects de l'interaction sociale. Nous investiguerons la perception par l'ordinateur de son interaction et des communications menées avec les utilisateurs. Nous proposerons une abstraction permettant de généraliser et de caractériser les actes de communications humains pour pouvoir les détecter et/ou les prédire.

Dans un premier temps, le but est de pouvoir reconnaître et identifier les actes de communications non-verbaux pour déterminer les intentions, les attentes et les marques d'affection ou de mécontentement implicites des utilisateurs. Les travaux menés en 2012 au sein de l'équipe PRIMA sur cette thématique ont validés des hypothèses formulées par les chercheurs en sciences cognitives. Les résultats concernant la reconnaissance de certains actes de communications non verbaux, la détection de l'engagement d'un être humain dans une interaction avec un robot compagnon dans notre étude, démontre la validité expérimentale des approches proposées en sciences cognitives mais ouvre aussi la voie à leur perfectionnement grâces aux progrès réalisés ces dernières années dans la perception par ordinateur. Ainsi, de nombreux outils de perception, maintenant matures, pourront être étudiés et combinés pour mener à bien cette tâche : reconnaissance faciale et/ou acoustique d'émotions, suivi du regard des utilisateurs, suivi de personnes dans un environnement 3D, etc. Ceci devra se faire en gardant à l'esprit l'apport des études comportementales en sciences cognitives.

Dans un second temps, nous étudierons la boucle de communication affective, base de l'interaction entre humains. Ce sera l'une des clés de la validation de notre approche et le premier jalon permettant d'envisager un ordinateur ou un robot, via différents biais et modalités (mobilité tangible de l'interface, voix de synthèse, ...), socialement expressif et adapté pour susciter l'intérêt ou pour enrichir les interactions avec les utilisateurs. Cela amènera une amélioration significative de l'acceptabilité de nos interfaces et de nos systèmes d'assistance.

Cette thèse s'inscrira dans les recherches actuelles menées par l'équipe projet PRIMA dans plusieurs de ses projets : ANR PRAMAD, ADT PAL de l'Inria et ICT labs.

As single-threaded performance has flattened, the prevailing trend in current hardware architectures is to provide an ever increasing number of processing units. Exploiting newer architectures poses tremendous challenges to application programmers and to compiler developers alike. Uncovering raw parallelism is insufficient in and of itself : improving performance requires changing the code structure to harness complex parallel hardware and memory hierarchies ; translating more processing units into effective performance gains involves a never-ending combination of target-specific optimizations, subtle concurrency concepts and non-deterministic algorithms. As optimizing compilers and runtime libraries no longer shield programmers from the complexity of processor architectures, the gap to be filled by programmers increases with every processor generation.

Driven by these challenges, we designed and implemented OpenStream, a high-level data-flow programming model, with the pragmatic perspective of achieving a fair middle-ground : programmers provide abstract information about their applications and leave the compiler and runtime system with the responsibility of lowering these abstractions to well-orchestrated threads and memory management. The expressiveness of such languages and the fine balance between the roles of programmers and compilers, as well as the static analysis and code generation techniques required to generate efficient code while abiding by the ``write once, compile anywhere'' rule, pose problems of great relevance from both theoretical and practical standpoints. The way forward still requires overcoming one of the greatest shortcomings of current compilers, their inability to understand concurrency, by developing new compiler intermediate representations for parallel programs. This is essential to both enable new compiler optimizations and avoid the current obfuscation of program semantics resulting from the lack of integration of parallel constructs in current intermediate representations. Finally, we developed a theoretical framework, the Control-Driven Data Flow model of computation, to reason about computation and execution in this context, to enable verification techniques and provide determinism guarantees.

Résumé _ : Nowadays, a lot of scientific applications want to use Cloud Computing platforms. Many papers have been published on porting a specific application in a Cloud. But they do not go further than running the application and only take into account a part of the resources available. The goal of my work is to design new provisioning algorithms for scientific applications on multiple Clouds. Contrary to other approaches, I take into account all the resources and not only the computing ones. The purpose of this presentation is to show than even common and simple scientific applications such as Bag Of Tasks request complex two-levels provisioning algorithms. To evaluate my algorithms, I rely on a simulation tool that I design : SimGrid Cloud Broker. I will present the simulator and the related performance models that allows to simulate the full Amazon Web Services Cloud. I will conclude on the need of taking into account non-functional objectives when co-provisioning scientific applications on federated Cloud platforms.
